Fast facts:
- 2018 Gerard Bertrand Saint Chinian Heritage An 1877, Languedoc, France ($9.99 @ Costco, California – Item #661141)
We have highlighted a number of Grenache, Syrah Mourvedre (GSM) blends here on these pages. This particular bottling is just missing Grenache in the cuvee. But it is no less delcious.
To paraphrase George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, all wine critics are equal, but some are more equal than others. At the top of that pecking order (IMHO) is Robert Parker and his Wine Advocate newsletter. So when I saw that they had rated this wine 90 points, my curiosity was piqued. When I saw that it was $9.99 at my local Costco (do the math: that is just over 10 cents per point!) two bottles landed in my cart. You may want to do the same…

Tasting Notes:
They refer to Gérard Bertrand as the ‘King of the Languedoc’ for a reason. That reason is wines like this one. It’s a rich, smooth wine offering a complex bouquet of cocoa, laurel, tapenade and black pepper. Notes of black fruits and sweet spice are enveloped in elegant tannins through to a long, velvety finish. Would pair well with savory vegetarian dishes, soft cheeses and fattier cuts of meat.
This 2018 Saint Chinian is part of the ‘Héritage range’ of wines that highlight the history and the expression of the terroirs of the South of France, by celebrating a date that has marked the history of the appellation. Saint-Chinian is a highly reputed village in the Languedoc region where vines have grown since the Middle Ages. 1877 pays tribute to modern times when the steam engine and the first Saint-Chinian railway enabled the wines to be transported from the regions to capital cities, revolutionising the area. The vineyard is planted on the sun-kissed slopes of sandstone and schist and benefits from a cool micro-climate. Only the grapes from the plots best suited to producing this type of wine were used in this cuvée. The majority of the grapes were hand-harvested.
