Fast facts:

2023 Terre Del Casone Vermentino, Toscana, Italy ($7.99 @Trader Joe’s, California)

The Casone name might be a familiar one to long time readers.  That’s because we love the ultra high QPR of their Super Tuscan which has been our Wine of the Week on several occassions.

Thus, we took notice when we saw this familiar brand attached to a white wine. The scallop shell on the label is all you need to know about this wine and pairing it with food.  It is light, refreshing and perfect complement to seafood prepared simply.  At just $7.99 a bottle, now would be a good time to stock up on a case to help get you through the coming spring and summer months.

For those of you unfamiliar with Vermentino, it is a grape variety produced predominantly in Corisca, southern France, and in this case, Italy.  Outside of Europe, it has also been heartily embraced by wineries in Australia.  If you’re a fan of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino may just land in your wheelhouse.

Tasting Notes:

Pours almost clear in color.  Fragrant nose of lemon, white peach and some minerals.  Fuller mouthfeel with more body than the color suggests.  Flavors include minerals, green apple, peach and a nice creaminess that mixes with saline into the persistent finish.  Would pair well with white seafood, pastas sans red sauce and hard cheeses. It would be sublime with oysters on the half shell. ABV = 12.5%
