Fast facts:
- 2019 Kirkland Signature Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, Chianti, Italy ($17.99@Costco, California, Item# 1714095)
We were excited to find this new addition to the Kirkland Signature wine portfolio, and hoped that it would live up to our expectations. It did, but will we ever see it again? Read on…
The back label of this wine states that it “is obtained by vinifying the best grapes of the Basilica Carfaggio estate” and shares that the wine is aged on oak for 30 months. Hence its 2019 vintage.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione designation this wine carries sits at the very top of the classification scale for Chianti, which puts it a notch above the Kirkland Signature Chianti Classico Riserva which is currently in stores.
Tasting Notes:
Showing some gracious age, the wine is a brick red hue in the glass with aromas of cherry, cedar and anise. Delicate mouthfeel with flavors of cherry, rhubarb, raspberry and sandalwood. Nice lingering finish with notes of cigar box, red raspberry, and plum. Well-balanced and would pair well with a wide array of foods. ABV = 14%.
And now we turn to the asterisk—that mysterious little detail on a Costco price tag shown below. Unless there is some mistake here, any item with an asterisk on the price tag means that item is leaving Costco soon. That could mean either the item will not be restocked because Costco decided to stop carrying it, or that the item was discontinued by the manufacturer, so it will no longer be available anywhere. It’s a mystery, but just in case, you may want to get your hands on some of this 2019 vintage just in case we never see this label again, in Costco.
Chianti wine is powered by the Sangiovese grape. It is the pride of Tuscany and as essential to Italian cuisine as extra virgin olive oil. There are few pleasures as distinct as a tart, spicy, herbaceous Chianti wine next to a plate of sliced prosciutto or pasta al pomodoro. So what are you waiting for?!
