Fast facts:
- 2021 Trader Joe’s Grand Reserve Lot #109 Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia ($12.99 @Trader Joe’s, California)
Let’s clear one thing up to start. Shiraz is the Australian name for the Syrah grape. Even though they are genetically the same, the word Syrah on a wine label is sometimes used to denote a lighter, fresher style of wine, like many of those produced in parts of France. But try telling that to winemakers in Cotes Rotie, California, and, of course, Australia where renditions are inky, concentrated affairs.
When I was a wee lad in the wine business, and curating wine selections for a wine retailer here in California, there was one characteristic I looked for in Australian Shiraz. Namely, a big ole dollop of blueberry. It is what we call “typicity” and this wine has it for sure. As it should.

Tasting Notes:
Classic Aussie Shiraz – a fruit bomb as we say in the trade. Pours a rich, dark red, portending the good things to follow. On the nose, graham crackers, a whiff of wood smoke, ripe blackberry and blueberry which show again in the mouth, but with the blueberries more dominant. Mild tannins and acidity. Medium finish with lingering notes of spice, black pepper and dark fruit. Would pair well with BBQ with tangy tomato based sauces or spicy rubs. Would also pair well with lean roasted meats. 14% ABV.

We have previously reviewed the 2017 vintage of this wine and this is as good or better. Better still, the price after four vintages is steady at $12.99. A great buy, and highly recommended for its high QPR.
