Fast Facts:
- 2021 DeLille Cellars Métier Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Washington ($19.99 @Costco in California – Item #1699463)
When you think of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) do you think of cool, moist, and overcast? Well, much of it is. But not all of it…
Fact is, the Columbia Valley is a sun-soaked part of Washington State. Hence, it provides ideal growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, with dramatic swings in temperature from day to night. This natural phenomenon, known as “diurnal shift” offers cool nights that conserve acidity, and intense sunny days that infuse bold, ripe fruit flavors. It is from this foundation of distinctive fruit that this wine was crafted.
At $19.99, this wine packs a lot of QPR and critics scores are unanimously in the low 90s. Here is what one critic had to say:
“A terrific value that would probably run you three times the price if it was from Napa, the 2021 Métier Cabernet Sauvignon has textbook leafy herbs, tobacco, and darker currant fruits in a medium-bodied, elegant, balanced package. It has classic Cabernet herbal, floral, spicy notes and is well worth drinking any time over the coming decade or so.”
To be perfectly honest, one of the things that first attracted me to this wine was the label. You see, my wife has been a hand therapist for her entire professional career. As such, we are naturally attracted to hands on wine labels. This one reflects DeLille Cellars winery acknowledging “the hands that diligently work their vineyards and cellar.”

Tasting Notes:
Métier Cabernet Sauvignon is an inviting, smooth wine with black cherry and plum aromas rising from the glass. Flavors of bold dark fruits and notes of baking spice combine with a juicy midpalate and grippy, herbaceous finish. Offers a balance of structure and approachability that can accompany a wide variety of foods, especially fatty cuts of meat and soft cheeses. ABV = 13.9%
Perhaps the most significant tasting note we can offer is a description of what is missing: oak. This wine was put together using very few lots that were aged in oak. You could almost call this an unoaked Cabernet Sauvignon.
